glimses of life

My baby just turned 3 months old a few days ago. She likes to suck her fingers and coo at us. Yesterday, she started to chuckle. There is a string of decorative birds hanging from the ceiling of my in-laws' bedroom. Each time I blew at the feathers to make the wheel turn, she chuckled. Bernadette really made my day indeed.

My recent childbirth

My recent delivery is the topic I wish to share with you about.

On the day of my 38th week checkup, I was advised by my gynae to be admitted immediately as the foetal heartrate was abnornomally rapid and the water level in the uterus was low. Upon admission, I was induced into labour. The next 30 hours I was made to go into the labour ward several times to see if my contractions were regular enough. It was tiring walking up and down with my big tummy. On the 3rd day I was warded, my cervix had dilated 3cm and the gynae quickly burst my waterbag to prepare me for labour. I was wheeled into the labour ward this time for good to monitor my contractions and prepare me for childbirth. Every 3 hours my gynae came to check my dilation. The anaesthetist applied epidural on me. Before that she explained the side effects of epidural usage. It may cause future backaches. Epidural had to be applied into the spine and I had to be very still for it to be applied effectively. I held onto my husband for support. It was like ant biting pain.

At midnight, my gynae said I was not making much progress and advised an emergeny caesarian operation. Immediately tears welled up my eyes as my husband would not be able to witness the birth of our child. My husband assured me that it was alright and the safety of both mother and child was of utmost importance. I was wheeled into the operating theatre.

As the operating team prepared to operate on me, I could feel the incision of the instrument and I yelled, "Didn't you tell me this was going to be painless? Why am I feeling the pain?" Somebody immediately put an oxygen mask over my mouth and I panicked and screamed that I couldn't breathe. Then I slowly breathed in and out and fell into sleep.

When my baby was delivered, they woke me up and I opened my eyes to see my baby. I waited to hear the cries of my baby before I felt relieved and fell into unconsciousness again. When I awoke this time,my baby was brought to my side and I brought her to suckle at my breast at the very first moment. She was the sweetest thing that I ever saw and I cried with tears of joy. The next day, I could feel the pain caused by my caesar wound and it was difficult to get out of bed. It was the most excruciating pain I ever felt and I still had the catether on to aid in my passing urine. Over the next few days, the nurses taught me to breastfeed my baby. Whenever my milk was insufficient, the nurses gave her supplement. The engorgement was also something new I experienced in my life and I learnt to express the milk to relieve the engorgement. The nurses were very kind and taught me all I needed to learn to cope with my new found motherhood. On the 5th day, my baby and I were discharged from hospital.
